10. GRUNDFOS TRANSFER PUMP DESCALING
The transfer pump P-210 will have scale
deposits build up on the impellors and bearings in the pump. This will lead to reduced pumping performance
and eventually to the pump stalling. The
scale is comprised of a mineral and iron scale. This scale is easily removed by soaking the components in a mild acid
solution until the scale is dissolved.
PUMP DESCALING PROCEDURE
- Place
the pumps Hand-Off-Auto switch to Off, and turn off the pump breaker.
- Remove
the coupling guards from the pump base.
- Remove
the pump/motor coupling.
- Unbolt
the motor from the pump stand and remove the motor.
- Remove
the pump from service by disconnecting the inlet and discharge piping.
- Install
back up replacement pump and complete steps 1 – 4 in reverse and restart system
(Optional – provided spare pump has been purchased).
- Following
Manufacturer’s instructions disassemble pump.
- Make
down a mild HCl (5:1) or Citric Acid (2:1) solution.
- Place
pump impellers, bearings, pump bowls, and pump shaft into acid solution.
- Remove
components as soon as scale is removed. HCl will begin to pit the stainless steel if left in the solution for
long periods of time.
- Reassemble
pump as per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Place
pump back into service or self as spare pump.
Note: Scale removal from items, such as the
bearings, could take upwards of an hour for the acid to penetrate and dissolve
the scale.
