The First Wave system is equipped with an online log sheet system that
automatically records and sends pressure, flow data, and conductivity to the LWR Innovation
Centre. If equipped with grÅControl, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) measurements are also sent.
The
following outlines the procedures for measuring TSS and conductivity for
each sample type and location. For a comprehensive list of equipment required
for the lab analyses, please refer to the "LAB EQUIPMENT LIST"
section of this manual.
To measure the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in the
influent manure, follow these steps:
Take a 500mL grab sample from the process piping after the influent
pump but before the screw press liquids return.
Open the first sample port valve on the inlet piping.
Allow the manure to flow for 2 minutes
before grabbing the 500mL sample.
Close the sample port valve.
Dilute the sample by adding 5mL of the sample into 495mL of clean
water.
Stir the diluted sample thoroughly to ensure proper mixing.
Turn on the DR 900 Colorimeter and select program 630.
Pour the mixed, diluted sample into a clean 25mL sample cell, filling it
up to the 25mL mark.
- Prepare a second clean 25mL sample cell with 25mL of clean water.
- Wipe the exterior of both sample cells with a clean microfiber or other non-abrasive cloth
Zero the colorimeter using the clean water sample cell.
Measure the diluted sample using the colorimeter and multiply the
obtained result by 100 to obtain the influent manure TSS measurement.
Ensure accurate measurements by following proper
sampling and laboratory techniques.
Electrical Conductivity (EC) Measurement
To measure
the electrical conductivity (EC) of the influent manure, follow these steps:
Take a 500mL grab sample from the process piping after the influent
pump but before the screw press liquid return.
Open the first sample port valve on the inlet piping.
Allow the filtrate to flow for 2 minutes before grabbing the 500mL sample.
Close the sample port valve.
Using a handheld EC meter, measure the
conductivity of the sample.
Ensure that the EC meter is properly calibrated according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
Immerse the EC meter probe into the sample, making sure the
electrodes are fully submerged.
Allow the reading on the EC meter to stabilize.
Remember to handle the
sample and the EC meter with care to ensure accurate readings.
Microscreen Filtrate Total Suspended Solids (TSS) Measurement
To measure the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) of the
Microscreen filtrate, follow these steps:
- Take a 500mL grab sample from the process piping after filtrate pump.
- Open the sample port valve on the filtrate piping.
- Allow the filtrate to flow for 2 minutes before grabbing the 500mL sample.
- Close the sample port valve.
- Dilute the sample by adding 50mL of the sample into 450mL of clean water.
- Stir the diluted sample thoroughly to ensure proper mixing.
- Turn on the DR 900 Colorimeter and select program 630.
- Pour the mixed, diluted sample into a clean 25mL sample cell, filling it up to the 25mL mark.
- Prepare a second clean 25mL sample cell with 25mL of clean water.
- Wipe the exterior of both sample cells with a clean microfiber or other non-abrasive cloth
- Zero the colorimeter using the clean water sample cell.
- Measure the diluted sample using the colorimeter and multiply the obtained result by 10 to obtain the filtrate TSS measurement.
Ensure proper handling of the sample and follow the
colorimeter's instructions for accurate and reliable measurements.
