When
operating the screw press, adjustments may be necessary to achieve the desired
moisture content in the solids. The moisture content can be controlled by
adjusting the pressure at the outlet of the screw press. Here are some
guidelines for making these adjustments:
TO OBTAIN DRIER SOLIDS:
Increase
the pressure at the outlet of the screw press. This will result in a lower
moisture content in the solids. However, keep in mind that increasing the
pressure will reduce the flow rate capacity of the press.
TO OBTAIN WETTER SOLIDS:
Decrease
the pressure at the outlet of the screw press. This will result in a higher
moisture content in the solids. Lowering the pressure will increase the flow
rate capacity of the press.
It
is important to find the right balance between moisture content and flow rate
capacity based on the specific requirements of your operation. Regular
monitoring and adjustments can help optimize the performance of the screw press
and achieve the desired results.
STARTING THE SCREW PRESS
To start the screw press, please follow these steps:
- Ensure that the screw press filtrate is directed back to the piping
before the microscreen and not discharged to the lagoon. This will ensure
proper flow and prevent any unwanted discharge.
- Open the solids door on the screw press. This will provide access
to the press chamber for the introduction of manure.
- Start introducing manure into the system. This can be done through
the appropriate inlet or feeding mechanism.
- Adjust the chemistry settings to minimize the liquid entrained in
the solids. This may involve optimizing the chemical dosing or other
relevant parameters to achieve the desired consistency and moisture
content in the solids.
- Allow some time for the screw press to operate and for the plug to
form within the press chamber. This process can take up to an hour or
longer. As the plug forms and compacts the solids, they will gradually
achieve a putty-like consistency.
It's important to monitor the operation of the screw press during this
process and make any necessary adjustments to optimize the performance and
achieve the desired solid consistency.
OPERATING THE SCREW
PRESS
To operate the screw press effectively, please follow these guidelines:
- Once the screw press is set up and running, it requires minimal
operator attention. However, periodic inspection of the solids being
produced is necessary to ensure that the plug remains intact and doesn't
get pushed out of the press chamber.
- During screw press operation, some solids may pass through the
screen and accumulate inside the screw press. This buildup of solids can
reduce the capacity of the screw press over time. It is important to
inspect and clean the screw press screen on a weekly basis to prevent any
reduction in capacity that may affect the overall system operation.
- During screw press operation, some solids may pass through the
press along with the liquid and accumulate in the screw press liquid
holding tank (V-130). These solids can sometimes form flocs inside the
tank, leading to issues with the level switch and the operation of the
P-130B pump.
It is recommended to inspect and clean tank
V-130 on a daily basis to prevent the buildup of solid flocs inside the tank.
Regular maintenance and cleaning of the screw press components will
ensure its optimal performance and prevent any operational issues that may
arise due to accumulated solids.
